Safe Havens to Protect Animals from Family Violence
Safe havens help individuals experiencing domestic violence place their companion animals out of harm’s way. Some domestic violence shelters house survivors and their pets together.
Safe Havens for Pets is a searchable directory for those experiencing domestic violence, created by the Animal Welfare Institute. The Animal Welfare Institute has a guide to help advocates and attorneys get pets of domestic violence survivors included in domestic violence protection orders in Indiana.
Pet Friendly Services will provide free spay/neuter vouchers for victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence organizations can apply by e-mailing info@petfriendlyservices.org
Where to Report Animal Cruelty
Want to report a case of animal abuse or neglect in Indiana? Visit the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) website. Click on your county, and report to the agency listed.
Wildlife Rehabilitators
Most animals found in the wild are regulated by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. If an animal is injured, you may call a permitted rehabilitator for assistance. Never compromise personal safety to help wildlife. You can find a list of permitted rehabilitators on the DNR website. Wild animal rehabilitation permits are issued to qualified individuals who take in sick, injured, or orphaned wild animals with the intent of releasing them back into the wild.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources maintains a list of permitted wildlife rehabilitators by county.
Pet Friendly Housing
Many websites are dedicated to pet-friendly apartments. If listings are not clear on whether pets are allowed, you can ask either the realtor or landlords. Typically, if a property is pet-friendly, there may still be restrictions on what type of pets and how many pets you can have.

Responsible Rehoming
Please do NOT give pets away for free on sites like Craigslist/etc. There are many dangers to giving pets to unscreened adopters. This article has more information.
If you can no longer keep your pet, taking the time to find a new home for your pet is the most responsible thing you can do. It will give your pet a much smoother transition to its new life without you. Most shelters and rescues are at of above capacity.
