Short-Term Fostering: Have You Tried it Yet?
From the Desk of Janet Showley, Programs & Development Manager:
Across the country, shelters are discovering a surprising truth: short-term foster programs often outperform traditional long-term fostering. Why? Because they’re easier to implement, attract more volunteers, and get results–fast. From field trips and weekend getaways to “Home for the Holidays” stays, these bite-sized commitments give dogs a much-needed break from the shelter while giving staff a clearer picture of their behavior in real-life settings. Many shelters are seeing happier dogs, faster adoptions, and less burnout– without the logistical tangle that can come with longer-term placements. Short-term fostering isn’t just a stopgap; for many shelters, it’s becoming the most powerful tool in their lifesaving toolbox.
So, where to start? Check out these resources:

If your shelter isn’t already offering short-term foster options, now is the time to start. These programs are simple to launch, easy to manage, and incredibly effective– not just for the dogs, but for your team and your community. Short-term fostering invites more people into your mission and gives your dogs the chance to shine outside the kennel. It’s a small ask with a big impact—and for many shelters, it’s the change they’ve needed to get dogs moving.
GREAT News For Indiana's Cats!
The Indiana Veterinary Technicians Association (IVTA) and the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) have officially endorsed the Feline Fix by Five initiative to encourage cat owners to spay or neuter their pets by five months of age.
The campaign is rooted in a simple but urgent fact: kittens can become pregnant by five months of age. Yet, many cat owners wait too long—resulting in accidental litters that fill Indiana’s shelters and strain already limited rescue resources.
The IVMA and IVTA’s support sends a strong message: spaying and neutering cats before five months of age is key to preventing accidental litters and saving lives.
We need YOU to help spread the word. SO many pet owner’s don’t know how early KITTENS can have even more kittens! Visit our page to find shareable graphics and resources.
