Stronger Together: Collaboration Saves Lives
From the Desk of Janet Showley, Development & Outreach Manager:
Those of us working in animal welfare all share the same goal: to protect animals and reduce suffering in our communities. Yet it’s easy—especially on hard days—to feel like each town or county exists in its own bubble. When resources are stretched thin and the needs feel endless, survival mode can take over. We focus on staying afloat, and sometimes we forget to look beyond our own walls.
But when we do, incredible things happen.
In early January, Wabash County Animal Shelter was faced with a daunting hoarding case: 29 dogs and 2 cats removed from a single property. The shelter shared the situation on Facebook—not as a plea for help, but as an educational post about the reality they were facing. A few days later, they posted again, this time with gratitude.
Humane Fort Wayne stepped in.
Knowing that Wabash was a smaller shelter with no medical staff, Humane Fort Wayne’s Executive Director and her four staff members—including a veterinarian—showed up in person. Together, they completed 29 medical assessments, administered rabies vaccinations, performed heartworm tests, and provided critical care and support. Wabash County later shared that when the team arrived, they felt an immediate sense of relief—and an overwhelming sense of camaraderie.
That’s the power of collaboration.
Animal welfare can sometimes feel competitive. Funding is limited. Capacity is tight. Emotions run high. And too often, we tear each other down instead of lifting one another up. But the truth is this: we are stronger together. Our impact is bigger when we work together. And the animals depend on us to rise above silos, pride, and competition.
Collaboration doesn’t always mean money or manpower. Sometimes it starts with communication, encouragement, or simply showing up when another organization is struggling.
Let’s keep asking not just, “How do we survive?” but also, “How can we help?” When we do, we don’t just save more lives—we build a stronger, more compassionate network for the animals who need us most.

Share with your Vet! Spay/Neuter Wet Lab for Dogs
One of the most powerful ways we can reduce shelter intake and save more lives is by expanding access to high-quality spay/neuter care. Spaying dogs has been a big challenge, so we’re working to get more dogs and puppies fixed.
If you work with veterinarians, or know a clinic that supports spay/neuter access, please share this opportunity with them.
Pet Friendly Services of Indiana, in partnership with the the Humane Society of Elkhart County and United Spay Alliance, is offering this hands-on spay/neuter wet lab. Only 6 seats are available!
These immersive, full-day trainings focus on practical techniques that help veterinarians:
- Increase surgical efficiency without compromising patient care
- Build confidence through guided, hands-on instruction
- Learn skills they can apply immediately in private practice, shelter medicine, or high-volume settings
- Help more animals by expanding access to timely spay/neuter services
Sunday March 22 in Bristol, Indiana 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
8 CE credits
Only $150 (lunch included)
Strong veterinary partnerships are essential to solving pet overpopulation, and trainings like this help make that possible.
Two MORE wet labs will take place later in 2026, with registration opening soon. Vets can save the date for:
- June 27 – Evansville (Cats)
- Oct. 25 – Lafayette (Dogs
Help Us Build the Animal Welfare Thrift Trail!
We’d like to see your group earn more money, so we are starting an online directory of Indiana resale and secondhand stores that support animal welfare. We need your input to make it as useful and comprehensive as possible. This directory will highlight stores where people can donate gently used items that benefit animals.
We’ll also encourage animal lovers to visit your stores and annual sales events. Information submitted through this form will appear in a public, searchable Google Sheet, making it easy for animal lovers statewide to find places where their donations and purchases make a real impact.
Before submitting a store, please check the existing list to make sure it has not already been added. This helps us keep the directory accurate and easy to use.
Thank you for the hard work you do each and every day to help Indiana’s animals!
