September 28 is World Rabies Day
World Rabies Day recognizes the essential role veterinary professionals play in protecting both animal and public health.
Rabies is preventable, but it remains present in Indiana wildlife. According to the Indiana Department of Health, 20 bats have tested positive for rabies in Indiana so far in 2026, compared with 12 during all of 2025. Nationally, the CDC has also reported increased animal rabies activity and associated human exposures.
World Rabies Day also highlights the connection between accessible spay/neuter services and vaccination. For many pets, a spay/neuter appointment is an important opportunity to receive vaccinations, including rabies. Expanding access to these services protects animals and helps build healthier, safer communities.
Thank you to Indiana’s veterinarians and veterinary teams who make this work possible.

Help Us Grow Our Veterinary Network
Know another veterinarian who wants to make a difference for animals in their community? Please share our programs with them!
Participating veterinarians can choose to work with any or all of our three year-round spay/neuter programs and can perform as few or as many surgeries as their clinic is able to accommodate. Clinics can also choose to work specifically with a local shelter or rescue.
Expanding our veterinary network helps more Indiana pet owners, shelters, rescues and community cat programs access spay/neuter services.
